Over the past year, the Language in Lyrics team has been hard at work compiling an index of Gaelic songs sung and composed in Nova Scotia and drawn from a variety of sources.
As a sneak peek, below is a simplified excerpt of the index created with song data from Mac-Talla, the Gaelic newspaper published in Sydney, Cape Breton from 1892 to 1904. This excerpt contains 100 songs (in alphabetical order) featured in Mac-Talla, Volume 6, 1897-1898.
We are working on a more comprehensive index which will be searchable and will present additional information for researchers, including alternative titles, air, first line of the chorus (if applicable), subject matter, gender voice of poetry, composer gender, date composed, and more.
